October Stay and Play
Thank you to all of you that attended our Stay and Play sessions, they were a great success and it was brilliant to see you all there supporting your children. Please don't worry if you were unable to attend as there will be a parent consultation on Tuesday 28th (Grasshoppers) and Wednesday 29th (Bluebirds) November.
We have two reception classes, Bluebirds and Grasshoppers – Miss Moyle and Miss Smith, Bluebirds – Mrs Spicer, Grasshoppers. We have a team of PTPs to support all children in their learning and development in their first year of school.
We always start with the child when planning, using the children’s previous knowledge, experiences and interested to motivate, challenge and engage them. We value both teacher directed learning (activities completed with guidance from an adult) and child initiated play (when the child decides how they will learn and develop through play).
Learning in reception is free-flow and takes place inside and outside the classroom. We are very fortunate here at Midfield and have a wonderful outdoor space including a musical garden, trim trail, Celtic hut, edible garden, mud kitchen and access to our forest school area on a weekly basis. The children love investigating the different areas allowing them to enquire, grow and develop in a range of ways gaining new skills.

Termly Overview - Autumn 1
Our main focus for this term is to get to know your child and help them to settle in the new environment, ensuring they are happy and therefore ready to learn. They will begin the first two weeks by coming to school for half a day. Week one they will come home before lunch. Week two they will come home after lunch. Please check Class Dojo for exact times. We welcome parents to bring the children into the classroom in the mornings and there you can help them to put their things away and talk to us if you feel you need to. We will complete a baseline assessment for each child that will enable us to get to know them and the stage of development they are currently at. This will enable us to tailor planning and learning opportunites to suit every child.
Towards the end of term 1 we will be learning our sounds through the Read Write Inc scheme. Children will work each day to focus on their reading and writing.
We will begin the year with number recognition, counting, colours, shapes and matching activities. Please see the medium term plan in the curriculum information folder for more details.
