Outdoor Learning Week

We undertook our first school-wide Outdoor Learning Week. The week gave everyone an opportunity to build on our daily offer by going off timetable to complete larger, more in-depth activities. A schedule was set up with a carousel of activities for different age groups, and classes worked on their own projects throughout the week, culminating in a special celebration assembly on Friday where we got a chance to share what we've been up to.

Different year groups worked on different activities and projects, e.g. taking part in a national survey - What's Under Your Feet for the British Trust of Ornithology - which got the children to dig up 30cm squared or turf to classify and record the invertebrates they found to see how this is affecting our wild bird populations. Another class produced a book of all the tress that we have in our playground. We even worked out how much carbon they captured from their environment by measuring the tree's height and circumference.

The carousel of activities was a lot of fun, with the mud ball bulls eye (a very studious maths activity!) being a big hit! Children rated their experiences following the week and this was a consistent 5-star rating!

The week was great fun and very memorable and was cited as a highlight of the year by many children when adding to their reports. We will run this as a regular addition to our school calendar every year.
