Here at Midfield we take the children on a chronological journey through the ages from year 1 to year 6. Starting at the dawn of time we teach right through the eras to the present day and this is reflected in our displays through our central timeline corridor in the middle of the school. We base the history curriculum on the core knowledge programme; embedding grounded historical knowledge in addition to key skills such as evaluation, questioning and becoming real historians.
History is a hands on at Midfield. We provide experiential learning which will engage the children and secure those key facts; this could include exciting activities such as building and burning our own Tudor houses to role playing the trial of the many dramatic court room trails and tribulations across the years. We ensure our topics lend themselves well to our promotion and learning of British Values, with talks of democracy throughout the ages and discussions about the rule of law, tolerance and the rights of people. Topics also always include extended writing and presentation.
This year we have introduced 'Immersion Days' into our History Curriculum. Each year has a topic to cover over a term, which leads to an Immersion Day at the end of the topic. This day allows for children to experience what it was really like to live in that time period.
