Learning in Year 4

Summer Term

In Year 4 a wide range of books and genres of writing will be covered. As a year we will have a look at features of different text styles, as well as learning to write in a particular style of writing. We will also focus on spelling, punctuation and grammar and making sure it is fluid in the children's writing. Reading will also be a core focus, looking at fluency of reading and decoding skills as well as emphasis and pronunciation.

In Year 4 the range of topics covered are: place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions, decimals, measure, time, perimeter and area, statistics, shape, and problem solving. There is also a huge focus on times tables and properties of number, allowing children to understand and recognise patterns in number. This year we focus on all of our times tables with a view to be confident in them by the end of the year. At Midfield we have adopted a maths mastery approach which ensures that children have mastered the topic before moving onto a new one. This is challenging but effective and allows secure knowledge of the topic being learnt.

This term, we will be looking at habitats – in this topic we will be exploring the different types of animals and their characteristics. We will also be researching and creating our own classification trees using the outdoor environment.

The Civil War is our topic for this term. The children will discover the key political and social changes of this era and explore the effect they had on our world today. We will also look deeper into the cause of the Great Fire of London and what London has changed since this happened.

This term our unit will be on Settlements. We will be exploring what makes a good settlement and the types of areas explorers looked for to start their own. To do this we will be using different types of maps and looking at origins and different place names.

Snazzy Sculptures is our unit this term. We will be exploring different sculpture artists and create our own sculptures from a range of different materials.
