Science Week 2025
We joined in with National Science Week and held our celebration from Monday 10th to Friday 14th March 2025. The theme this year was Change.
Changing and adapting plays a big part in science; you can find examples in every area of STEM. Cities, towns and other areas where people live change and adapt as the world’s population grows, plants and animals change and adapt to their surroundings to survive. Technology has changed exponentially and adapted to our new, busier lives (or have we changed as technology has developed?). For example, phone technology has changed from rotary home telephones to smartphones.
Our behaviours change too – we need to change how we consume the world’s resources to offset the worst effects of the climate crisis, and adapt our lifestyles to reduce our impact through recycling or reducing waste.
We explored the theme through two whole-school assemblies and various activities, including everyone attending The Wiggly Wild Show sessions about how animals and minibeasts change and adapt to their environment.
Whole School Assembly 1 – Spectacular Science, who currently run a Wednesday after school club, came in to give us a whole-school assembly on Monday 10th March at 9.10am.
Whole School Assembly 2- Wiggly Wild Show, who ran sessions for all classes on Tuesday 11th and Wednesday 12th March, finished with a whole school assembly at 2.40pm on Wednesday 12th March.
We also took part in Buddy Science experiments - e.g. Year 5 buddied with Year R for the Happy Nappy experiment to look at the properties of water-absorbing crystals in disposable nappies.
All of EYFS took a trip to Godstone Farm to see how animals change and develop. They saw new lambs and chicks and learnt about what animals need to be happy and healthy. They also hatched chicks from living eggs and butterflies from caterpillars.
The whole school also took part in a range of Science Farm Live sessions which focussed on Adaptation and encouraging children to be Change Champions.
Finally, children took part in our #ScienceSelfie Competition, where they sent in a picture and description of themselves carrying out science in their everyday lives. The standard of entries was really high, and science book prizes were given out to the best entry in EYFS, KS1, lower KS2 and upper KS2.
